Braveheart (1995)
Braveheart (1995) is an epic historical drama set in late-13th century Scotland. Directed and produced by Mel Gibson, the film follows Sir William Wallace, a brave Scottish warrior who leads his people in the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward I of England. After the Scots’ king dies without an heir, Edward I, also known as ‘Longshanks’, conquers Scotland in 1280. Witnessing the brutal execution of several Scottish nobles by Longshanks, young William Wallace loses both his father and brother when they resist the English. He then goes to live with his uncle, Argyll. As years pass, Longshanks rewards his noblemen with land and privileges in Scotland, including jus primae noctis. Additionally, his son marries French princess Isabelle.
As an adult, Wallace returns to his hometown and secretly ties the knot with his childhood companion, Murron MacClannough. Despite rescuing Murron from an English soldier, she is later captured and executed. Enraged, Wallace and the locals band together to overthrow the English garrison and spark a rebellion that gains momentum quickly. While Longshanks is away campaigning in France, he orders his son to put a stop to Wallace’s actions. However, Wallace defeats the prince’s army at Stirling before taking on England by storming York. During this time, he also meets Robert the Bruce, who is vying for the Scottish crown. Meanwhile, Longshanks sends Isabelle to negotiate with Wallace as a diversion from his own troops’ movements.
