Breach (2007)
Breach (2007) is a American spy thriller film directed by Billy Ray, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Adam Mazer and William Rotko. The movie follows Eric O’Neill, a young and ambitious FBI employee who is tasked with going undercover as a clerk to Robert Hanssen, a senior agent suspected of deviant behavior. Despite being recalled from his position at the State Department to head a new division focused on Information Assurance at FBI headquarters, Hanssen maintains a strict formality with O’Neill. He frequently expresses frustration with the bureau’s bureaucracy and notes that only those involved in ‘shooting guns’ are considered for higher positions, rather than individuals like him who deal with important national security matters. Additionally, Hanssen criticizes the FBI’s outdated information technology systems and bemoans the lack of coordination and information sharing with other intelligence agencies.
Over time, Hanssen becomes both a friend and mentor to O’Neill, taking a personal interest in him and his wife Juliana. Juliana, however, is wary of Hanssen and resents his involvement in their lives. As a devout Catholic and member of Opus Dei, Hanssen encourages O’Neill (a lapsed Catholic) and his secular East German-born wife to become more involved in the church. Despite initially having doubts about Hanssen’s character, O’Neill grows to respect his boss as he sees no evidence of a double life. This leads O’Neill to finally confront his handler in the undercover assignment, Kate Burroughs. She reveals that the allegations of sexual deviance were not the main concern – rather, Hanssen is suspected of spying for the Soviet Union and Russia for many years and being responsible for the deaths of US agents.
