Breathe (2017) is a biographical drama film, marking Andy Serkis’ first time directing. The screenplay was written by William Nicholson. In 1958, Robin Cavendish falls ill with polio at the age of 28 while in Kenya. Shortly after marrying his wife Diana, he becomes paralyzed from the neck down and relies on a respirator to breathe. The doctors give him just three months to live and he is flown back to Britain. Initially, Robin is despondent and refuses to see his wife or newborn son, Jonathan. He even expresses a desire to be taken off life support. Through Diana’s persistent love and care, however, his spirits slowly improve. She suggests bringing him home so she can provide for his daily needs and Robin’s mood brightens considerably. Despite strong opposition from the hospital’s administrator, Dr. Entwistle (who tells Diana that even two minutes without the ventilator may prove fatal), with the support of other medical staff, Robin is transferred home where he finally meets his son.

While Jonathan is playing with his dog, the canine accidentally unplugs the ventilator. Despite Robin noticing, he is unable to physically communicate with Diana. Instead, he uses clicking noises to get her attention. Diana eventually realizes that Robin is unresponsive and promptly reconnects the ventilator. This event sparks an idea in Robin’s mind after seeing his son push a pram. He enlists the help of his friend Teddy Hall to create a mobile chair equipped with a respirator. With the assistance of Diana and her two brothers, Robin is able to travel outside of their home for the first time. Thanks to a specially designed van, the family can go even further by flying on a cargo plane to Spain.
