Bringing Out the Dead (1999) is an American psychological drama film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader. It is based on the 1998 novel by Joe Connelly. Set in Manhattan, it follows the story of paramedic Frank Pierce who is struggling with depression, insomnia, and burnout after a failed attempt to save a homeless teen named Rose. Now haunted by her ghost, Frank continues to work alongside his partner Larry and responds to a call from the family of Mr. Burke, who has suffered cardiac arrest. At the scene, Frank befriends Mary, Mr. Burke’s devastated daughter and former addict. As they converse, he learns that she was friends with Noel, a troubled drug addict who is regularly brought to the hospital for treatment.

After a few minor calls, Frank and Larry are called to the scene of a shooting. While assisting a surviving victim in the back of an ambulance with Noel, Frank discovers two vials of ‘Red Death’ heroin hidden in the victim’s sleeve. Despite the victim’s attempt to repent for his involvement in drug dealing, he tragically passes away before they reach the hospital. The following day, Frank is paired with Marcus, who exudes charisma and strong religious beliefs. They are dispatched to a club for a man reported to be in cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, Frank determines that the man is actually suffering from an overdose caused by Red Death. As he administers Narcan, Marcus gathers the bewildered club-goers for a prayer circle and just as his passionate preaching reaches its peak, the overdosed man miraculously regains consciousness.
