Burn After Reading (2008)
Burn After Reading (2008) is a black comedy film created by the Coen brothers. When Osbourne Cox gets demoted for drinking, he quits his job as a CIA analyst and decides to write a memoir. His wife Katie secretly files for divorce and resumes her affair with U.S. Marshal Harry Pfarrer, who is prone to paranoia. Katie gives her lawyer a copy of Osbourne’s digital records and other personal files, which include an early draft of his memoir. The lawyer’s assistant copies the files onto a CD-R and accidentally leaves it at Hardbodies gym. Personal trainer Chad Feldheimer and coworker Linda Litzke come across the disc and mistakenly believe it contains confidential government information. Chad and Linda come up with a plan to return the disc to Osbourne in hopes of receiving a reward. Linda is determined to gather funds for cosmetic surgery.
However, their attempt at blackmailing Osbourne only manages to anger him. Failing to get any money from him, they decide to try selling the disc to the Russian embassy. They meet an official who, as it turns out, works for the CIA. Osbourne’s erratic behavior leads Katie to change the locks on their home and invite Harry to move in. Harry, known for being unfaithful, happens to meet Linda on a dating site and they start a romantic relationship. In order to keep their false promises to the Russians, Linda convinces Chad to break into the Cox house and steal more files from Osbourne’s computer. Unfortunately, Chad gets caught by Harry who accidentally shoots and kills him in self-defense. A search of Chad’s body reveals an empty wallet and missing suit tags – an idea he got from Linda as a safety measure.
