Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) is an American Western buddy film directed by George Roy Hill and written by William Goldman. Set in 1899 Wyoming, it follows the story of Butch Cassidy, a charming and clever leader of the outlaw group known as the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang. His closest companion is his skilled but quiet partner, the ‘Sundance Kid’. When they return to their hideout after a long absence, they find that the rest of their gang has chosen a new leader, Harvey Logan. Logan challenges Cassidy to a knife fight for leadership, but Cassidy outwits him using cunning tactics. However, he agrees with Logan’s idea to rob a Union Pacific train on both its eastward and westward runs – believing that the second robbery will be more unexpected and profitable than the first. The first robbery goes smoothly, so Cassidy decides to celebrate by visiting a brothel in a nearby town. Meanwhile, Sundance meets up with his lover, schoolteacher Etta Place.
The next morning, Cassidy joins up with the gang and takes Place for a ride on his new bike. However, during their second train robbery, Cassidy uses too much dynamite and the resulting explosion demolishes the baggage car. The money scatters everywhere and as they frantically gather it, a second train carrying a six-man team of lawmen arrives. Despite their efforts to hide out in a brothel and seek amnesty from Sheriff Bledsoe, Cassidy and Sundance are pursued by the relentless posse. The team includes renowned Indian tracker ‘Lord Baltimore’ and lawman Joe Lefors, easily recognizable by his white skimmer hat. In a daring escape attempt, Cassidy and Sundance jump off a cliff into a river below. Later on, they discover that Union Pacific head E.H. Harriman has paid the posse to pursue them until they are dead.
