By the Sea (2015)
Set in 1960s France, By the Sea (2015) is an American romantic drama film that follows an American couple, Vanessa and Roland, as they embark on a seaside vacation. Written and directed by Angelina Jolie, the film also stars Jolie and Brad Pitt, who also produced it. The pair have rented a luxurious suite at a local hotel with the hopes of inspiring Roland’s writing. However, their relationship is strained; former dancer Vanessa is withdrawn and grieving for unknown reasons while struggling author Roland spends his days drinking at a nearby bar. One day, Vanessa becomes intrigued when she notices a hole in their hotel room wall that leads to the next apartment. Through this peephole, she watches newlyweds Lea and Francois.
Vanessa and Lea quickly become friends, and the two couples often spend time together, even going sailing. However, during a night out, they slyly get Lea and Francois intoxicated in order to observe their actions through a secret peephole. This act of voyeurism ultimately leads to Vanessa and Roland reigniting their physical relationship. Unfortunately, Vanessa takes things further by attempting to initiate a sexual encounter with Francois in his hotel room. Upon witnessing this through the peephole, Roland bursts in and attacks Francois. Later on, during a heated confrontation between the couple in their own room, the underlying issue is revealed – due to multiple miscarriages, Vanessa has come to terms with her inability to bear children.
