Café Society (2016)
Café Society (2016) is a romantic comedy-drama, written and directed by Woody Allen. Bobby Dorfman, the youngest member of a Jewish family living in New York City during the 1930s, feels dissatisfied with his job at his father’s jewelry store. Seeking a change of pace, he heads to Hollywood where his uncle Phil, a powerful talent agent, offers him work running errands. While settling into the city, Bobby meets Vonnie – Phil’s secretary – and is charmed by her down-to-earth demeanor. Despite being enamored with her, she rejects his advances and reveals she has a boyfriend named Doug. Unbeknownst to Bobby, ‘Doug’ is actually Phil and their relationship is far from innocent; he has promised to divorce his wife for Vonnie.
On their first anniversary as a couple, Vonnie presents Phil with a letter from Rudolph Valentino as a gift. However, Phil reveals that he cannot leave his wife and ends their affair. Following this, Vonnie and Bobby’s friendship blossoms into a romance. As Phil confides in Bobby about his affair without mentioning the woman involved, he also shares his plan to divorce his wife. Bobby casually mentions his own relationship with Vonnie and his intentions to marry her and move back to New York. Phil then starts persuading Vonnie in private to leave Bobby and marry him instead. While talking with Phil in his office, Bobby notices the Valentino letter and recalls hearing about it from ‘Doug’ (Vonnie). He confronts her and asks her to choose between himself and Phil. Vonnie ultimately chooses Phil over Bobby.
