Call Me by Your Name (2017)
The romantic drama film, Call Me by Your Name (2017), is directed by Luca Guadagnino. Set in Northern Italy, the Perlmans own a villa outside of Moscazzano where they spend their summers and Hannukah. This year, they’ve invited an American graduate student named Oliver to join them for six weeks and assist Professor Perlman with his work. During his stay, Oliver befriends Elio, the seventeen-year-old son of the Perlmans, and his female friends all swoon over his preppy good looks. Though Oliver casually pursues one of these girls, Chiara, Elio – who is still exploring his own masculinity – ends up getting involved with another friend named Marzia instead. Without Oliver’s presence, Elio may have chosen Chiara as his romantic interest.
Despite their close proximity in the villa and social circles, Elio and Oliver have a complicated dynamic. Elio finds Oliver too confident and brash, while Oliver sees Elio as condescending towards him. However, beneath these surface behaviors lies a mutual attraction based on their intellectual admiration for each other. As they finally acknowledge these feelings towards the end of Oliver’s stay, they both struggle with different obstacles. For Oliver, it is his fear of coming out and potentially causing harm to both himself and Elio. Meanwhile, Elio is excited to explore the passion of first love but must also navigate his relationship with Marzia, who may or may not share his strong feelings for her.
