Cape Fear (1991)
Cape Fear (1991), an American psychological thriller directed by Martin Scorsese, is based on the 1962 film and 1957 novel of the same name. In 1977, Max Cady was sentenced to 14 years in prison. His attorney Sam Bowden was horrified by Cady’s crimes and concealed evidence that may have lessened his sentence or won his acquittal. Believing Cady, who was illiterate during the trial, remained unaware of his inadequate defense, Bowden was taken aback when he discovered that Cady is an intelligent and determined psychopath. While behind bars, Cady taught himself to read and uncovered the hidden evidence. He also studied law and made multiple unsuccessful attempts to appeal his case.
Upon completing his sentence, Cady tracks down Bowden in New Essex, North Carolina, where he resides with his wife Leigh and 15-year-old daughter Danielle (‘Danny’). Cady then begins to stalk and terrorize the family, leading to the poisoning of their dog. Despite Bowden’s attempts to have Cady arrested, Police Lieutenant Elgart reminds him that there is no evidence of a crime. During this time, Cady also becomes involved with Lori Davis, a courthouse clerk who harbors feelings for Bowden. Unfortunately, Cady violently attacks Davis but she refuses to press charges due to their flirtatious relationship potentially becoming public knowledge. Despite Elgart’s suggestion to use his family as bait, Bowden decides to hire private investigator Claude Kersek to track and monitor Cady’s activities.
