Cape Fear (1962)
Cape Fear (1962) is an American psychological thriller film noir directed by J. Lee Thompson, from a screenplay, based on the novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald. Released from prison in Southeast Georgia after serving eight years for rape, Max Cady quickly seeks out attorney Sam Bowden. Cady blames Bowden for his conviction and holds a grudge against him for interrupting his attack and testifying against him. Cady begins to stalk and subtly threaten Bowden’s loved ones, including his wife Peggy and their 14-year-old daughter Nancy. He even kills the family dog, though Bowden lacks evidence to prove it was Cady’s doing. Despite Police Chief Mark Dutton’s attempts to help, there is no solid proof of any crime committed by Cady.
In desperation, Bowden turns to private detective Charlie Sievers for assistance. While Nancy waits in a car one day, Cady approaches her and she runs, narrowly avoiding being hit by a car. In response, Bowden hires three men to confront Cady and force him to leave town. However, this plan backfires when Cady proves to be stronger and more resourceful than the hired men. Seeking revenge for his attack, Cady’s lawyer threatens to have Bowden disbarred. Fearing for Peggy’s and Nancy’s safety, Bowden takes them to their houseboat in the Cape Fear region of North Carolina. To deceive Cady, Bowden pretends to go to Atlanta while actually staying close by. He expects that Cady will follow his family and he plans to end their battle once and for all by killing Cady.
