Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001)
John Madden directed Captain Corelli’s Mandolin (2001), a war film based on Louis de Bernières‘ 1994 novel of the same name. The Italian Army, accompanied by a few Germans, occupies Greece’s Ionian Islands and takes over the peaceful island of Cephalonia. The island’s inhabitants surrender quickly. Among the invaders is Captain Antonio Corelli of the Italian 33rd Acqui Infantry Division. He is known for his cheerful personality and love for playing the mandolin. Despite his troops never having fired a shot before, he teaches them to sing in harmony. This initially causes tension with some villagers, including Pelagia, the daughter of the local doctor. Pelagia is an intelligent and strong-willed woman who is not easily won over by Corelli’s charm or musical talents. However, as circumstances force them to share her father’s home in exchange for medical supplies, she gradually warms up to him.
When Pelagia’s fiancé Mandras, a local fisherman, goes off to war on the mainland, her friendship with Antonio deepens. Her beauty and intelligence have won over Corelli’s heart, and his appreciation for the lively community of the village leads him to question his purpose for fighting. Accompanied by his musical unit, Corelli becomes a part of the villagers’ daily lives; although their time together is brief. As the war draws nearer, Antonio and Pelagia are faced with a difficult decision: to remain loyal to their nations or follow their hearts. The Italian government surrenders to the Allies, allowing their troops to happily return home. However, their former allies, the Germans, forcefully disarm them. The Greeks also suffer at the hands of the incoming Germans and team up with the Italians in a short-lived yet futile attempt at resistance.
