Carlito’s Way (1993) is an American crime drama film helmed by Brian De Palma and written by David Koepp. The screenplay is based on the novels Carlito’s Way (1975) and After Hours (1979) written by Judge Edwin Torres. Set in 1975 New York, the story follows Carlito Brigante’s release from prison after serving five years of a thirty-year sentence. His close friend and lawyer, Dave Kleinfeld, uses a legal loophole to get him out. Despite his initial plans to leave behind his criminal ways, he agrees to accompany his cousin Guajiro to an illegal drug deal at a speakeasy. However, things go awry when Guajiro’s suppliers betray and murder him, leading Carlito to use force to escape. In the aftermath, he takes $30,000 from the botched deal and invests it in a local nightclub owned by a gambling addict named Saso. His intentions are to save $75,000 and retire in the Caribbean.
Carlito declines multiple offers for a business partnership with Benny Blanco, a young hothead from the Bronx. He also reignites his relationship with Gail, a former ballet dancer who worked as a stripper. Dave becomes infatuated with Steffie, Benny’s girlfriend and a waitress at the club. As tensions rise between Carlito and Benny, an altercation breaks out at their table when Benny cannot contain his frustration with Carlito’s rejections. In the heat of the moment, he manhandles Steffie as Dave, fueled by drugs and alcohol, pulls out a gun and threatens to take revenge on behalf of his friend. However, Carlito steps in to prevent any violence from occurring. Despite being threatened himself by Benny, Carlito chooses to let him go unharmed, ultimately causing a rift between him and Pachanga, his loyal bodyguard.
