The animated series, Carmen Sandiego (2019–2021), combines action and adventure with educational elements. It is based on the media franchise of the same name created by Broderbund. Black Sheep, an orphan girl, was discovered on the side of a road in Buenos Aires, Argentina about two decades ago. She was raised and trained to be a master thief by a group of villains who also serve as the faculty at V.I.L.E. Academy. This school is located on the Isle of V.I.L.E. in the Canary Islands and serves as a training ground for thieves and a secret criminal organization. To Black Sheep, this island and its faculty are her only home and family, but when she discovers the true nature of V.I.L.E., she goes against them. She escapes the island and takes on the alias Carmen Sandiego. Her mission now is to undermine V.I.L.E.’s operations by stealing back what they have stolen, returning it to its rightful place or owner. She also aims to prevent their future heists and plans from being carried out.
Carmen’s team consists of her white-hat hacker friend Player, who provides recon tech support, and the Boston siblings Zack and Ivy. They assist Carmen during her missions and often serve as distractions or operate getaway vehicles. Despite their differences, Carmen treats each member with care as they work together to foil V.I.L.E.’s criminal plots. However, they must constantly evade A.C.M.E., the mysterious law enforcement agency intent on arresting both V.I.L.E. and Carmen. A recurring theme is the frequent misinterpretation of Carmen’s actions and intentions by both organizations. She is known as a modern-day Robin Hood, traveling the world to steal from V.I.L.E. and return stolen goods to their rightful owners. Accompanied by her trusted companions Player, Zack, and Ivy, she is easily recognizable in her signature red attire. Unfortunately, most law enforcement agencies perceive her as a master criminal due to the scale and dramatic nature of her heists in season one.
