aIn the Victorian fantasy world of Carnival Row (2019–2023), Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne take on the roles of two star-crossed lovers. The city is filled with mythical creatures who have been displaced from their homelands by invading human empires. These immigrants struggle to coexist with their human counterparts in the city’s grimiest district, where they are forbidden to fully live, love, or even fly freely. Despite the darkness and intolerance surrounding them, there is still glimmers of hope as a forbidden romance blossoms between Rycroft Philostrate, a human detective, and Vignette Stonemoss, a refugee faerie. However, their affair becomes increasingly dangerous as society becomes less accepting. Meanwhile, Philo’s latest investigation into a series of brutal murders uncovers a shocking truth about the true monster lurking in the shadows of Carnival Row.

Vignette Stonemoss narrowly flees Pact soldiers by boarding a ship with other fae-folk she aided in escaping the occupied fae land. Unfortunately, a violent storm at sea leaves Vignette as the sole survivor. The ship was owned by Ezra Spurnrose, who resides in one of the more affluent neighborhoods of the Burgue alongside his sister Imogen. After suffering significant losses from the shipwreck, Ezra expects Vignette, who is under indentured servitude, to work as a lady’s maid for Imogen. However, during a trip to Carnival Row on an errand, Vignette runs into her old friend Tourmaline, now working as a prostitute. To Vignette’s surprise, Tourmaline reveals that Vignette’s lover Philo is still alive and has become a police inspector investigating violent attacks on fae-folk. In his investigation, Philo discovers that the assailant is a sailor who tragically takes his own life before Philo can apprehend him. Before dying, the sailor warns Philo of an awakened “dark god” lurking beneath the city.
