Carol (2015)
Carol (2015) is a touching romantic drama set in the past and directed by Todd Haynes. The film, based on acclaimed author Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt, features a screenplay written by Phyllis Nagy. It takes place during the holiday season of 1952 and follows the story of Therese Belivet, an aspiring photographer who works at Frankenberg’s department store in New York City. One day, while working at the store, Therese meets Carol Aird – a strikingly beautiful woman in search of a Christmas present for her daughter Rindy. At Therese’s suggestion, Carol ends up buying a model train instead of a doll. As she leaves the store, Carol accidentally leaves behind her gloves which Therese kindly mails back to her using Frankenberg’s sales slip with her name and address on it. Meanwhile, Therese’s boyfriend Richard wants her to accompany him on a trip to France and potentially get married there. However, Therese is unsure about their relationship. Around this time, Dannie – a mutual friend – invites Therese to visit him at his workplace in The New York Times and offers to introduce her to one of his photo editor colleagues.
Carol contacts Frankenberg’s to express her gratitude to the kind clerk who returned her lost gloves. She extends an invitation to Therese for lunch. Later, Therese pays a visit to Dannie, but their encounter becomes uncomfortable and she decides to leave. Carol then offers Therese an invitation to join her at her home in New Jersey. While on the way, they make a quick stop to purchase a Christmas tree, which prompts Therese to capture candid photographs of Carol. Unexpectedly, Harge shows up to take Rindy away for Christmas in Florida. However, his suspicions are aroused when he sees Therese, knowing of Carol’s past affair with her friend Abby. An argument ensues that Therese witnesses. Once Rindy has gone, Carol takes Therese to the train station as she is feeling distressed and needs some time alone.
