Carrie (1976) is an American supernatural horror film directed by Brian De Palma from a screenplay written by Lawrence D. Cohen, adapted from Stephen King’s 1974 epistolary novel of the same name. The film follows sixteen-year-old Carrie White, a shy teenager who lives with her fanatically religious and unstable mother, Margaret. Carrie is a loner and constantly bullied by her peers. One day, while at school, Carrie experiences her first period but panics as she was never taught about menstruation. Her classmates find humor in the situation and begin to tease her, throwing tampons and sanitary pads at her until the gym teacher, Miss Collins, steps in to stop them. However, Margaret believes Carrie’s period was caused by sin and punishes her by locking her in a ‘prayer closet’.
At school, Miss Collins reprimands Carrie’s bullies and threatens to punish them if they refuse to apologize and stop their behavior. After being banned from the prom for her relentless bullying, Christine ‘Chris’ Hargensen teams up with her boyfriend Billy Nolan to seek revenge on Carrie. They break into a farm and drain pigs’ blood into a bucket, planning to use it in their cruel scheme against Carrie at the school’s gym. Meanwhile, Sue Snell, one of Carrie’s remorseful classmates, persuades her popular boyfriend Tommy Ross to take Carrie to the prom. At first, Carrie is skeptical about the invitation, but Tommy assures her that it is genuine. As she prepares for the big night despite her mother Margaret’s objections, Carrie discovers she has telekinesis.
