Carrie (2002), a supernatural horror television film, is based on Stephen King’s 1974 novel of the same name. The film is both a re-imagining of the novel and the third installment in the Carrie franchise. During his investigation into the disappearance and suspected arson of high school student Carrie White, Detective John Mulcahey interviews several individuals, including students like Sue Snell and Ms. Desjarden, her gym teacher. Through these interviews, details emerge about the events leading up to Carrie’s disappearance. One week before the prom at Ewen High School, Carrie is a lonely and shy girl who endures bullying from popular girls such as Chris Hargensen and Tina Blake. During a particularly cruel incident in the gym showers, Carrie experiences her first period while being taunted by her peers. Ms. Desjarden ultimately steps in to stop the assault and offers comfort to Carrie.
After being mistakenly called the wrong name by Principal Morton, Carrie is dismissed and becomes irate, causing her to shout out in frustration and inadvertently move Morton’s desk. On her way home, she encounters a boy on a bike who attempts to play a prank but instead crashes into a tree. Upon reaching her house, Carrie remembers a traumatic childhood experience with her devoutly religious and strict mother, Margaret White. Due to her mother’s belief that menstruation is linked to sexual immorality, Carrie is confined in a ‘prayer closet’ as punishment. The next day, Ms. Desjarden assigns the girls a week of detention for their harassment of Carrie. She warns them that any attempts to skip detention will result in suspension and exclusion from the prom.
