Carrie (2013) is an American supernatural horror film, directed by Kimberly Peirce. It’s the third adaptation and a remake of Stephen King’s novel from 1974, also titled Carrie. The main character, Carrie White, is a shy and unpopular girl at Ewen High School in Maine. One day while showering after gym class, she experiences her first menstrual period. Fearing she is dying, she calls out for help but instead is mocked by her classmates who throw tampons and pads at her. Chris Hargensen, the school bully, films this on her phone and uploads it to YouTube. Miss Rita Desjardin, the PE teacher, consoles Carrie before sending her home with her extreme religious mother Margaret White who believes menstruation is sinful. Margaret insists that Carrie no longer shower with the other girls and becomes angry when Carrie refuses. She hits Carrie in the forehead with a Bible and locks her in a ‘prayer closet’.
As Carrie screams for freedom, a crack forms on the door and the crucifix in the closet bleeds. She discovers new telekinetic abilities and conducts research to learn how to control them. Miss Desjardin offers an ultimatum to the girls who bullied Carrie: either serve detention or face suspension, which would prevent them from attending prom. Only Chris refuses to comply and is subsequently suspended. Feeling remorse for her actions, Sue Snell enlists her boyfriend, Tommy Ross, to take Carrie to prom. Carrie agrees and creates her own prom dress at home. Despite her mother’s disapproval, Carrie insists on going to prom and displays her telekinetic powers. Margaret views this as evidence of satanic influence and believes that Carrie has been corrupted by sin.
