Casablanca (1942) is a romantic drama film directed by Michael Curtiz. The main characters, played by Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid, find themselves in the city of Casablanca during World War II. Rick Blaine, an American expatriate who runs ‘Rick’s Café Américain’, welcomes all types of patrons to his club – Vichy French officials, Nazi Germans, refugees seeking a way to the United States, and those looking to take advantage of them. Despite claiming neutrality, Rick has a history of involvement in political conflicts, including smuggling weapons to Ethiopia in 1935 and fighting for the Loyalists in the Spanish Civil War. One night, a small-time criminal named Ugarte reveals to Rick that he possesses letters of transit acquired through killing two German couriers.

These documents allow free travel in German-occupied Europe and ultimately lead to neutral Portugal. With plans to sell them at the club, Ugarte convinces Rick to hold onto them for him. As he prepares to meet his contact, Ugarte is taken into custody by the local police, headed by the unscrupulous Captain Louis Renault. Unfortunately, Ugarte passes away while in detention, without revealing that Rick holds the valuable letters. Shortly afterwards, Ilsa Lund, Rick’s former lover and the cause of his cynical demeanor, enters his establishment. She notices Sam, a mutual friend and pianist at Rick’s place, and requests that he play ‘As Time Goes By’. This angers Rick because he had banned the song from being played again, but he is taken aback when he sees Ilsa.
