Casino (1995)
Casino (1995) is an epic crime film directed by Martin Scorsese, based on Nicholas Pileggi’s nonfiction book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas. In the movie, sports handicapper and Mafia associate Sam ‘Ace’ Rothstein is enlisted by the Chicago Outfit to run the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas alongside frontman Philip Green. With Sam at the helm, the casino sees a significant increase in profit, thanks in part to some unaccounted-for cash skimmed from the count room and delivered to the Midwest Mafia bosses. To ensure protection for Sam, the money, and the casino itself, Chicago boss Remo Gaggi sends Sam’s childhood friend and fellow mobster Nicky Santoro to oversee operations. To help him out, Nicky enlists his younger brother Dominick and their mutual friend Frankie Marino, forming a skilled team that specializes in shakedowns and jewelry burglaries.
Nicky’s illegal actions in Las Vegas begin to attract significant attention from the media and law enforcement, ultimately resulting in his placement on the Black Book. As a result, he is banned from all casinos in Nevada. During this time, Sam meets and falls for Ginger McKenna, a charming con artist, showgirl, and former prostitute. They tie the knot and have a daughter named Amy. However, their relationship becomes strained when Ginger reconnects with her former lover Lester Diamond, a hustler and pimp. Caught accepting $25,000 of Sam’s money from Ginger, Lester is brutally attacked by Nicky’s associates at Sam’s command. In 1976, due to poor performance, Sam fires Don Ward from his role as slot manager.
