Cast Away (2000)
Cast Away (2000), an American survival drama film directed and produced by Robert Zemeckis, follows the story of Chuck Noland. Chuck is a FedEx systems analyst who travels the world fixing productivity issues. He lives in Memphis, Tennessee with his girlfriend, Kelly Frears. The couple discusses marriage but their plans are repeatedly interrupted due to Chuck’s work demands. This begins to strain their relationship. During a Christmas dinner, Chuck receives an urgent call to resolve a problem in Malaysia. Before leaving, Kelly gives him her grandfather’s pocket watch containing a photo of her and he gives her a small box, hinting at an engagement ring inside that she can open on New Year’s Eve when he returns.
During a violent storm, Chuck boards a FedEx cargo plane that ultimately crashes into the Pacific Ocean. Despite being the sole survivor, he encounters challenges upon washing ashore an uninhabited island. As packages continue to wash up on the coast, Chuck takes it upon himself to organize them. Additionally, he buries one of the pilots whose body also washes ashore. In his efforts to survive, Chuck faces difficulty in locating sustenance and hydration. His attempts to escape on a life raft are hindered by the tide and leave him with a leg injury. With rescue seeming unlikely, Chuck opens most of the packages and discovers useful items that aid in improving his living conditions. However, there is one particular package decorated with pink angel wings that remains unopened.
