Castello Cavalcanti (2013)
The short film, Castello Cavalcanti (2013), penned and directed by Wes Anderson, features Jason Schwartzman as a struggling race car driver who meets an unfortunate fate in an Italian village. Shot at Cinecittà in Rome with funding from Prada, this 8-minute film premiered at the Rome Film Festival. In the charming village, locals gather outside a caffe to socialize and enjoy drinks and card games; meanwhile, a young boy plays with a miniature Formula One car. As the sound of a car horn echoes in the distance, villagers eagerly wave small flags in anticipation of the approaching race. Suddenly, a motorcycle leads a pack of roaring race cars through an archway as drivers shout excitedly. Passersby capture the moment on camera while cheering villagers continue to wave their flags in support.
Soon, Jed Cavalcanti can be heard rushing towards us, shouting ‘Goddammit!’ as the car careens offscreen. Italy, September 1955, reads the caption. The scene cuts to Jed sitting in a burning Formula One car, quickly escaping and running into the caffe for water. Some helpful men rush to his aid, extinguishing the fire. In frustration, Jed curses and blames the crash on the car’s design. As he converses with the Italian-speaking villagers in his American accent, Jed joins them in a game of cards while enquiring about the next bus arrival time. Still grumbling about the faulty car, Jed discovers that he shares a familial connection with these villagers from Castello Cavalcanti. Overjoyed, he greets them as family.
