Casualties of War (1989)
Casualties of War (1989) is an American war drama film directed by Brian De Palma and written by David Rabe. It is primarily based on an article written by Daniel Lang for The New Yorker in 1969, which was later published as a book. The story is told through the eyes of Max Eriksson, a Vietnam veteran, as he reflects on past events. Leading his platoon on a nighttime patrol is Lieutenant Reilly, with Eriksson among the soldiers. During this mission, they are suddenly attacked by the Viet Cong (VC) after being discovered by a panicked member of the team. While guarding their flank, Eriksson falls into a VC tunnel that caves in beneath him. Acting quickly, Sergeant Tony Meserve pulls him out and the platoon ultimately retreats from the jungle.
After taking a break near a river village in the Central Highlands, one of Meserve’s close friends – Specialist 4 ‘Brownie’ Brown – tragically loses his life in an ambush. The devastating loss has a profound effect on Meserve and his comrades. The platoon returns to their base, where Private First Class Antonio Dìaz joins them as the new radio operator. Meserve, who is growing increasingly annoyed by their lack of leave, commands his squad to take a Vietnamese girl captive. Despite Eriksson’s strong objections, Meserve, Corporal Thomas E. Clark, and Private First Class Herbert Hatcher refuse to listen. Before they depart for their mission, Eriksson confides in his friend Rowan about his worries. As night falls, the group enters a nearby village and abducts a young Vietnamese girl named Tran Thi Oanh.
