Catch-22 (2019)
The Hulu miniseries Catch-22 (2019) is a dark comedy based on Joseph Heller’s novel of the same name. It follows Captain John Yossarian, a WWII bombardier stationed on the island of Pianosa. As an individualist, Yossarian constantly seeks ways to protect his own life. However, due to the army’s confusing regulations, he finds himself unable to escape his duties through illness or leave. Despite witnessing countless tragedies and the disregard of higher-ups for their well-being, Yossarian cannot use insanity as an excuse to go home because of Catch-22.
The show follows United States Army Air Forces Captain John Yossarian stationed on the island of Pianosa during World War II. Yossarian is a self-serving individualist who desperately tries to protect his own life by seeking refuge in the hospital. However, thanks to an army regulation known as Catch-22, he is unable to be grounded for illness or granted a leave. Despite his efforts to evade flying missions, Yossarian finds himself constantly exposed and in danger as he drops bombs over enemy territory. The story takes place in the Mediterranean theatre of WWII, where Yossarian’s fictional squadron conducts bombing raids over fascist-controlled Italy while based on the fictitious island of Pianosa.
