The film Cat’s Eye (1985), directed by Lewis Teague and written by Stephen King, is an American anthology horror thriller that consists of three tales. While the first two are based on short stories from King’s 1978 collection Night Shift, the third is a unique addition to the film. Each story revolves around a traveling cat, as well as Drew Barrymore, who has minor roles in the first two and a major role in the third. The stray tabby cat finds refuge in a delivery truck headed for New York City, where it encounters a frightening sight: the ghostly figure of a young girl desperately seeking assistance. The cat eventually crosses paths with a man who picks it up.

Quitters, Inc. Dick Morrison is urged by a dear companion to become a member of Quitters, Inc. in order to break his smoking addiction. The facility’s physician, Vinnie Donatti, clarifies that they have achieved a flawless success rate through a highly effective approach: any time Dick gives in to the temptation of a cigarette, his wife Cindy and their daughter Alicia will suffer increasingly horrific consequences. Donatti illustrates this method using a stray tomcat caught by his assistant Junk: the feline is confined in a cage and subjected to electric shocks from the floor.

The Ledge. After escaping the commotion at Quitters, Inc., the cat continues its journey from Manhattan to Atlantic City, New Jersey via the Staten Island Ferry. There, it once again encounters the familiar image of a disembodied girl, pleading for its help. This time, it is connected to a casino owner and crime boss named Cressner, who has a habit of placing bets on anything. Cressner’s current wager involves the cat successfully crossing a busy road outside his casino. Upon winning, Cressner brings the cat back to his home where he has another man named Norris kidnapped. Under threat of being arrested for drug possession, Norris agrees to a dangerous task set by Cressner: circumnavigate the exterior ledge of his penthouse. This challenge could ultimately grant Norris’s wife a divorce if he succeeds.

General. Once onboard a freight train, the cat makes its way to Wilmington, North Carolina, where it is welcomed into the home of Amanda, the girl who had previously asked for its help. Amanda names the cat General, but her mother worries that he may harm their pet parakeet, Polly. Despite Amanda’s reassurances, her mother insists on keeping General outside at night. This proves to be unfortunate when a small, malevolent troll takes up residence in their house and attacks Amanda while she sleeps. The troll uses a tiny dagger to kill Polly and then attempts to steal Amanda’s breath. Luckily, General manages to enter the house and chase off the troll. In the scuffle, General injures his shoulder with the troll’s dagger before it escapes, leaving Amanda and her parents to discover the dead bird.
