Chances Are (1989)
The American romantic comedy film, Chances Are (1989), directed by Emile Ardolino follows the story of young district attorney Louie Jeffries. In 1964, Louie is tragically killed in a car accident but miraculously finds himself reborn and able to enter heaven’s gates. Fast forward to 1987, where we find Louie’s widow Corinne still mourning his loss and unaware of the unrequited love from his best friend Phillip Train. Phillip has lovingly raised Louie’s daughter Miranda as his own. Miranda, now a Yale University student, meets Alex Finch during her studies. As graduation approaches for Alex, he sets his sights on a career at The Washington Post in Washington, D.C. However, his initial attempts to meet with Ben Bradlee are unsuccessful and he concocts a clever plan pretending to be a delivery man in order to gain access to Bradlee’s office.
As Alex enters Bradlee’s office, Phillip follows closely behind. Perplexed by the young man, Bradlee inquires about his identity. Upon mentioning their previous encounter at Yale, Phillip interjects to vouch for Alex, swaying Bradlee’s initial thoughts. However, Bradlee ultimately feels that Alex needs more experience with smaller papers before he can potentially offer him a job. Dejected, Alex departs from the office. Downstairs in the lobby, Phillip comes across Alex and offers him a ride. During their journey, Phillip extends an invitation for Alex to join the Jeffries family for dinner. As they arrive at the Jeffries’ residence, which is unfamiliar to Alex, he suddenly experiences flashbacks from a previous life. Filled with anguish, Alex begins to act erratic and disoriented. As pieces of the puzzle fall into place, Alex realizes that he is Louie Jeffries – Corinne’s deceased husband – reincarnated.
