Changing Lanes (2002) is an American drama thriller film directed by Roger Michell, featuring Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson as the main characters. In New York City, two men find themselves in a rush to get to court for very different reasons. One is a recovering alcoholic named Doyle Gipson, who is fighting for joint custody of his sons after attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to maintain sobriety. The other is Gavin Banek, a successful Wall Street attorney, who needs to file an important document before it’s too late. While driving on the FDR Drive, Banek’s car collides with Gipson’s. Instead of following proper procedures and exchanging insurance information, Banek offers Gipson a blank check but Gipson declines, wanting to handle the situation correctly. Despite Banek’s insistence on leaving immediately due to his drivable car, Gipson stands firm.

After leaving Gipson stranded with a casual ‘better luck next time’, Banek arrives late to court and receives the unfortunate news that the judge has ruled against him. The ruling grants Gipson’s wife sole custody of their boys and paves the way for her plan to move to Oregon. However, unbeknownst to his wife, Gipson had already made arrangements to buy a house locally in an effort to make joint custody work for their family. As Banek realizes he has misplaced a crucial file at the scene of the accident, the judge extends his deadline until the end of the day to retrieve it. Meanwhile, Gipson has picked up the file but is struggling with whether or not to return it. In desperation, Banek seeks out a ‘fixer’ – a shady computer hacker – who helps him sabotage Gipson’s credit and ruin his chances of securing a home loan to keep his family together.
