An American sci-fi film Chaos Walking (2021), directed by Doug Liman and written by Patrick Ness and Christopher Ford, is an adaptation of Ness’s trilogy of the same name. The first book, titled The Knife of Never Letting Go, serves as the basis for the movie’s plot. Set in 2257 AD on the planet New World, the male colonists are affected by a condition known as Noise, which exposes everyone’s thoughts to one another. The colonists were previously engaged in a conflict with a native humanoid species called The Spackle, resulting in the death of all female colonists and half of the men surviving. Todd Hewitt resides in Prentisstown alongside his adoptive fathers, Ben Moore and Cillian Boyd. Other notable figures in town include preacher Aaron, mayor David Prentiss (whose Noise is now under control), and his son Davy. A spaceship that lost contact with the initial colony approaches New World and sends a scout ship to investigate, but it ends up crashing. While chasing after a thief who stole something from him, Todd stumbles upon this crash site.

Todd returns to the town and tries to keep quiet, but the other men hear and see his thoughts about the crashed ship; they head to investigate the crash scene and scavenge some parts of the ship, but find no survivors. While Todd is alone, he meets Viola, the crash’s only survivor. He is shocked to see a girl, as he has never seen one before. The men from Prentisstown capture Viola and she is brought to the mayor’s home, where she is questioned about where she came from. Prentiss explains to her what the Noise is and what has happened on their planet. While he leaves to go speak to the men, Davy is charged with keeping an eye on her. Davy unwittingly toys with one of Viola’s gadgets, which causes it to shoot large holes in the walls, helping Viola escape.
