Charlie Wilson's War (2007)
Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), an American biographical comedy-drama, tells the story of Congressman Charlie Wilson and CIA agent Gust Avrakotos. The duo worked together to establish Operation Cyclone, a program aimed at supporting Afghan mujahideen during the Soviet–Afghan War (1979–1989). Directed by Mike Nichols and written by Aaron Sorkin, based on George Crile III’s book, the film follows Congressman Wilson in 1980 as he focuses more on partying than his legislative duties. His lavish lifestyle eventually raises concerns about alleged cocaine use, leading to an investigation by federal prosecutor Rudy Giuliani as part of a larger probe into congressional misconduct. However, no charges are brought against Wilson as a result.
Joanne Herring, a friend and romantic interest, urges Charlie to take action to help the Afghan people. She convinces him to visit Pakistani leaders who express their frustration with the lack of support from the U.S. in opposing the Soviet Union. As a result, Wilson is moved by the determination of Afghan refugees living in camps in Pakistan but becomes frustrated by regional CIA personnel’s insistence on a low-key approach against the Soviet occupation. Determined to make a difference, Charlie returns home and rallies for increased funding for the mujahideen. He seeks out unconventional CIA operative Gust Avrakotos and his understaffed Afghanistan group, including young paramilitary officer Michael Vickers, to develop an effective strategy against the Soviets’ Mil Mi-24 Hind helicopter gunships.
