Chasing Mavericks (2012), a biographical drama, follows the journey of young Santa Cruz native Jay Moriarity. As an 8-year-old, Jay was rescued from the ocean by his neighbor and experienced surfer Frosty Hesson. This near-death experience sparked his love for surfing. Years later, at the age of 15, Jay stumbles upon Frosty preparing to surf the massive waves at Mavericks with his friends. With El Niño approaching and Mavericks reaching its peak in three months, Frosty reluctantly agrees to teach Jay how to tackle this legendary swell. However, he emphasizes the importance of mastering the fundamentals of surfing first. To achieve this, Jay must complete a grueling training regimen that includes paddling 36 miles across Monterey Bay, treading water for 40 minutes, and holding his breath for four minutes.

While undergoing rigorous training under Frosty’s guidance, Jay channels his focus by writing essays. In one particular essay about Kim, his childhood crush whose dog he saved from drowning years ago, Jay reflects on how this event shaped his passion for surfing.  As Jay continues to train, Frosty’s wife Brenda provides him with some encouragement. Sadly, Brenda suffers a stroke a few weeks before the biggest swell of the season at Mavericks and passes away. Distraught by her death, Frosty heads out into the bay a few days later. Worried about his friend, Jay follows and uses what he has learned in his training to help get Frosty safely back to shore. It becomes clear that Jay is ready to ride at Mavericks, and Frosty takes him to Half Moon Bay with his three friends by his side.
