Chef (2014)
Chef (2014) is an American comedy-drama film that centers around Miami-born Carl Casper, the head chef at Gauloises in Brentwood, Los Angeles. Despite being popular with his staff and hostess Molly, Carl clashes with the restaurant’s owner, Riva. She wants him to stick to traditional dishes instead of his innovative creations. Carl also has a troubled relationship with his ex-wife Inez and their tech-savvy son Percy. During a visit from food critic Ramsey Michel, Riva insists that Carl stick to old favorites rather than trying something new. These demands lead to a negative review from Ramsey, which prompts Carl to publicly insult him on Twitter and gain a large following online. After an altercation with Ramsey results in him losing his job, Carl decides to start a food truck business with his son by his side.
After impressing his staff with a new menu and challenging Ramsey to a ”rematch, he loses his job for confronting Riva about her preference for the old menu. At home, Carl puts together the desired menu while his sous-chef Tony serves Ramsey dishes from their previous meeting. Unfortunately, Ramsey takes to Twitter to criticize Carl, leading to a heated confrontation at the restaurant. As videos of Carl’s outburst spread online, his professional reputation suffers and job opportunities dry up. However, when Inez invites him to join her and Percy in Miami, he rediscovers his passion for Cuban cuisine. Thanks to her encouragement, Marvin offers him a rundown food truck. While working on the truck with Percy and buying groceries, the two bond and Carl gifts him with a chef’s knife.
