The movie is based on Chris Grine’s graphic novel of the same title. Two decades prior, brothers Peter and Lapin were searching for the legendary Hamster of Darkness without success. However, they did come across something unexpected during their journey – a hybrid baby with both chicken and hare features. Peter took him in as his own child, naming him Chickenhare. Growing up, Chickenhare idolizes his father’s adventures and aspires to follow in his footsteps. In present day, he tries to join the Royal Adventure Society but fails due to his chicken disguise hindering him during the trials. Determined to prove himself, Chickenhare sets out to find the Hamster of Darkness and seeks help from Lapin who is imprisoned for attempting to overthrow Peter as king. Using one of Chickenhare’s feathers, Lapin escapes with a group of inmates in search of the artifact as well.
In his quest to stop Lapin, Chickenhare enlists the help of his trusty tortoise servant Abe. Together, they make their way to a desert city in search of a guide for the treacherous Desert of Death. However, before they can secure a guide, they are confronted by two of Lapin’s henchmen. Fortunately, skunk explorer Meg comes to their rescue and agrees to lead them through the desert. But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they are captured by Pigmies in a bamboo forest. These tribal pig-like creatures believe Chickenhare to be a deity and plan to sacrifice him, along with his companions, in a volcano. Feeling defeated, Chickenhare starts blaming his appearance for their predicament. It is then that Meg shares her own story of embracing her skunk nature and encourages Chickenhare to do the same as they press on with their travels.
