In a drama China Girl (1942) an American newsreel photographer named Johnny Williams finds himself in Luzhou, China where he is taken captive by the Japanese military. Despite being offered a large sum of money to photograph the crucial Burma Road that supports the Chinese war effort, Johnny declines. This results in him being returned to his cell where he meets ‘Major’ Bull Weed, a Canadian posing as a Chinese irregular. With the help of their confederate ‘Captain’ Fifi, who sneaks in a gun during her supposed dramatic goodbye, the two men are able to escape captivity. Fifi then reveals that she saw a plane at an abandoned airfield nearby and Johnny uses his skills as an ex-barnstormer to fly them through dangerous anti-aircraft fire to safety in Mandalay.

Upon their arrival, they encounter another old acquaintance, Captain Shorty Maguire, a mercenary pilot with the U.S. ‘Flying Tigers’ defending China against Japan. Johnny is once again invited to join a side, but declines. He realizes that the document he picked up while escaping Luchow is written in Japanese, instead of being his confiscated press credentials. With only two words deciphered by Bull, Johnny’s interest quickly fades when he sees a beautiful woman nearby. Haoli Young, who has just returned from New York where she attends Vassar, informs him that her father Dr. Young has a home in the city and is selling off their valuable possessions to support a mission school for orphans in Kunming. After walking there with her, Johnny meets Dr. Young.
