China Girl (1987) is an independent neo-noir romantic thriller film directed by Abel Ferrara and written by his longtime partner Nicholas St. John. Set in 1980’s New York City, the story follows teenage boy Anthony ‘Tony’ who lives in Little Italy and works at a pizzeria making dough. During a night out at a nightclub, he meets and dances with the beautiful Chinese teenager, Tye. Their encounter is cut short when Tony is pursued by the local Chinese street gang led by Tsu Shin, but he is saved by his older brother Alberto ‘Alby’, who heads the Italian gang. Meanwhile, Tsu Shin’s decision to destroy a Chinese restaurant in Little Italy causes tension within the gang as Yung Gan, Tye’s brother and true leader of the group, disapproves of the act.
As tensions rise, their actions draw the attention and anger of Mr. Gung Tu, the powerful leader of the Chinese mafia. Meanwhile, Alby, his right-hand man Mercury, and their crew opt to retaliate against the Chinese assault by venturing into Chinatown. This leads to a warning from Enrico Perito, an Italian crime boss, to abide by the neighborhood boundaries set in place by a mafia agreement among leaders. Amidst all this tension between rival gangs, Tony and Tye find themselves falling for each other in secret, resulting in disastrous outcomes.
