Chocolat (2000)
Chocolat (2000) tells the story of a young woman named Vianne and her daughter Anouk, as they travel through Europe, guided by the same north wind that led Vianne’s mother years before. In 1959, they settle in a tranquil French village where the strict mayor, Comte de Reynaud, is gearing up for Lent. Despite not being accepted by the villagers, Vianne opens a chocolate shop and slowly starts to win over some of the locals. However, Reynaud, who is still in denial about his wife leaving him, publicly denounces Vianne for tempting people during Lent. One of her early supporters is her elderly landlady Armande, whose daughter Caroline refuses to let her see her grandson Luc due to Vianne’s supposed negative influence.
Vianne organizes a meeting between him and his grandmother at the chocolaterie, where they form a bond. Upon discovering their secret encounters, Caroline discloses her mother’s diabetes, yet she still indulges in chocolate when visiting the shop. Meanwhile, Vianne befriends Josephine, who is facing physical abuse from her husband Serge, the local café owner. Through their companionship, Josephine gains the courage to leave Serge after being beaten, and moves in with Vianne and Anouk. As she works at the chocolate shop and learns the art of chocolate-making, her self-assurance gradually grows. At the same time, under Reynaud’s guidance, Serge attempts to make things right following his abusive behavior and eventually asks Josephine to return to him. However, she refuses.
