Set in 1974 Sarasota, Florida, the movie follows reporter Christine Chubbuck as she navigates her career at a local news station. Constantly clashing with her boss Michael over editorial decisions, Christine is torn between pursuing human-interest pieces or catering to the desire for crime-focused news that brings in ratings. She also harbors feelings for her colleague George Peter Ryan. Amidst all of this, Christine receives some upsetting news from her doctor and faces the prospect of having an ovary removed. Meanwhile, rumors begin to circulate about potential promotions at the station, leading Christine to take matters into her own hands by buying a police scanner to seek out more newsworthy stories.
Despite receiving praise from her co-workers, Michael criticizes Christine’s stories and rejects her idea for a documentary and recreation piece. He also informs her that her segment will not air. In frustration, Christine lashes out at Michael in front of the entire station before storming out. After taking a weekend off, she returns to work and asks George to take her out for a conversation. The two bond over personal confessions during dinner. George offers to help Christine and takes her to a Transactional Analysis self-help group where they participate in an exercise called ‘Yes, But’. In this exercise, one person shares their problems while the other offers solutions.
