Chronic (2015)
Chronic (2015), a drama film written and directed by Michel Franco, follows the story of David. He is first shown waiting in his car outside a house before a young woman leaves and drives away. David then begins to follow her. Later, he can be seen browsing through Nadia Wilson’s Facebook photos- the very same person he had been following earlier. It is revealed that David is a male nurse who cares for his first patient, Sarah, who is suffering from AIDS. He takes great care in bathing and dressing her, as well as managing her daily activities- such as politely turning away visiting family when Sarah needs rest and assisting with meals. One day at work, David receives the news of Sarah’s passing. He enters her room to find her deceased and proceeds to tenderly clean and dress her one last time.
At the funeral, her niece inquires if he is available to talk about her aunt, but he declines. Later, at a bar, he strikes up a conversation with a newly engaged young woman. During their chat, he shares that his marriage lasted 21 years and his late wife’s name was Sarah. He also reveals that she passed away from AIDS. David’s next patient is an elderly stroke victim named John, who happens to be an architect. As they spend time together, John grows fond of David, who allows him to watch explicit films on his laptop. While browsing at a bookstore, David poses as an architect and purchases books on the subject. He then presents John with a picture of a house (designed by John himself) as a birthday present.
