Cinderella (2015)
Director Kenneth Branagh helmed the romantic fantasy film Cinderella (2015), with a screenplay written by Chris Weitz. Ella, the benevolent daughter of a wealthy merchant, enjoys a happy life with her parents. However, their peaceful existence is disrupted when her mother falls ill and passes away. Before she dies, Ella’s mother implores her to always be courageous and kind. After some time, Ella’s father remarries a widow named Lady Tremaine who has two daughters of her own: Drisella and Anastasia. Upon returning from a business trip, Ella’s father suddenly passes away. This leaves Lady Tremaine to reveal her callous and envious traits, forcing Ella out of her bedroom and into the attic to live with her stepsisters. The household staff is dismissed by Lady Tremaine in an attempt to save money, leaving all the household tasks for Ella to bear alone. Due to sleeping by the fireplace at night, Ella wakes up each morning with soot-covered skin on her face, leading her stepfamily to mockingly nickname her ‘Cinderella’.
Distraught by her stepfamily’s mistreatment, Ella seeks solace in the woods. There, she encounters Kit, the crown prince, who introduces himself as a palace apprentice. Despite their brief encounter, they feel drawn to each other and part ways without exchanging names. Meanwhile, Kit’s father, the king, reveals his plan to hold a royal ball where he hopes Kit will find a suitable princess to marry. Eager for a chance to reunite with Kit, Ella decides to attend the ball. She transforms her mother’s old dress and attempts to join her stepfamily at the palace. However, they ruin her dress and refuse to let her attend. Heartbroken, Ella runs into the garden where she meets an unexpected visitor – an old beggar woman who reveals herself to be her fairy godmother. With her magic wand, she turns a pumpkin into a carriage, mice into horses, lizards into footmen, and a goose into a coachman for Ella’s journey to the ball.
