City of Angels (1998), an American romantic fantasy film directed by Brad Silberling, follows the story of Seth, an angel living in Los Angeles. Seth and his fellow angels have the important duty of protecting humans in subtle ways. One of Seth’s main tasks is to guide those near death to the afterlife. In order to better understand human beings, Seth and Cassiel often ask people about their favorite things in life during these encounters. However, as angels do not possess human senses, they struggle to comprehend human behavior. While waiting to guide a man undergoing heart surgery to the other world, Seth is moved by the dedication and effort of Maggie Rice, the surgeon trying to save him. Despite her sincere anguish at failing to save the man’s life, her determination leaves a lasting impression on Seth.
Seth quickly fixates on Maggie and becomes visible to her. A bond forms between them, gradually evolving into a mutual attraction. However, Maggie is already romantically involved with her co-worker, Jordan Ferris. While spending time with Maggie, Seth crosses paths with Nathaniel Messinger, one of her patients who can sense his presence. Nathaniel reveals that he too was once an angel but chose to become human by ‘falling’, as free will applies to both angels and mortals. As Seth contemplates being with Maggie, she learns about his true identity as an angel. Ultimately, Seth makes the decision to become human by leaping from the top of a skyscraper. Upon awakening in his new form, he begins to experience unfamiliar emotions and sensations such as physical pain that he couldn’t comprehend before.
