City of Lies (2018)
The crime thriller film City of Lies (2018) follows the Los Angeles Police Department’s investigation into the killings of rappers Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. In 2015, investigative reporter Darius ‘Jack’ Jackson from the Los Angeles Times is assigned to cover the Notorious B.I.G.’s murder. Jackson seeks out retired and disgraced LAPD detective Russell Poole for information. Through a series of flashbacks, Poole shares his belief that Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight bribed corrupt officers to carry out Wallace’s murder and conceal it. In 1997, Poole is tasked with looking into the shooting of off-duty black officer Kevin Gaines by white detective Frank Lyga, which occurred just weeks after Wallace’s death. Poole faces pressure from higher-ups amid the media frenzy surrounding other racially-charged events in Los Angeles, such as Rodney King’s beating and O.J. Simpson’s murder trial.
During the investigation, Poole discovers that Gaines was receiving payments from Knight and had ties to the Bloods gang. Despite this evidence, Poole’s superior, Lieutenant O’Shea, dismisses the theory and orders Poole to close the case on the Gaines-Lyga shooting. As a result, Lyga is found not guilty but later faces a civil suit represented by attorney Johnnie Cochran on behalf of the Gaines family. Poole’s suspicions are confirmed when he obtains information from an undercover FBI agent linking Knight and Gaines. He is then reassigned to the Robbery-Homicide Division to investigate the murder of Wallace. Working with his partner Fred Miller, they gather a list of potential suspects including David Mack, another LAPD officer in Knight’s employ, Amir Muhammad from the Nation of Islam, and Wardell Fouse from the Bloods gang. Poole also learns that Mack had been working as security for Wallace and is linked to a recent bank robbery.
