Civil War (2024)
Civil War (2024), a dystopian thriller film written and directed by Alex Garland, portrays a United States ravaged by internal strife. The country is divided into two factions: an authoritarian federal government, headed by a third-term president, and rebellious secessionist groups. Despite the president’s claims of imminent victory, it is widely believed that the ‘Western Forces’ (WF) led by Texas and California will soon take over Washington, D.C. Surviving a suicide bombing in New York City only strengthens the resolve of veteran war photographer Lee Smith and his journalist colleague Joel to seek out an interview with the isolated president. Their mentor Sammy advises against this dangerous mission but ultimately decides to accompany them to the frontlines in Charlottesville, Virginia. The next morning, Lee discovers that Joel has also invited young aspiring photojournalist Jessie Cullen, whom they had met during the bombing.
Upon leaving the city, the group makes a pit stop at a gas station guarded by armed men. Jessie takes a moment to explore the nearby car wash, only to stumble upon the men torturing two alleged looters. A guard trails her, but Lee intervenes by snapping a photo of the man posing with his helpless victims. Later on, Jessie reflects on her fear preventing her from capturing such atrocities on camera. As they rest for the night amid ongoing fighting, the group captures footage of secessionist militiamen successfully attacking a loyalist-held building. Recognizing Jessie’s potential as a war photographer, Lee takes on a mentorship role while she photographs the secessionists executing prisoners. The next day, after spending the night at a refugee camp, they pass through a small town where residents try to live in ignorant bliss with guards keeping watch amid the war’s chaos.
