Clean and Sober (1988)
Clean and Sober (1988) is an American drama film directed by Glenn Gordon Caron. It follows Daryl Poynter, a successful but self-destructive real estate salesman in Philadelphia who struggles with cocaine addiction. After embezzling $92,000 from his company’s escrow account, he loses an additional $52,000 to his drug habit and poor stock market investments. One morning, he wakes up next to a woman who suffered a cocaine overdose and attempts to hide the situation from the police. However, they are aware of what happened. On top of that, there is the issue of the missing money. With no escape plan, Daryl heads to the airport but is stopped when his credit card is declined and he has no cash on hand. His colleague Martin refuses to help him out for more than a couple of weeks. In desperation, Daryl hears about a month-long rehabilitation program on the radio that promises anonymity.
After checking in, Daryl decides to seek refuge there. At the rehab center, he crosses paths with Craig, a tough yet supportive counselor. It’s not easy, but with Craig’s help, Daryl begins to acknowledge his addiction and the chaos it has brought into his life. ‘Breaking old habits requires forming new ones’, Craig advises him during a 12-step meeting. With the hope of finding a sponsor, Daryl approaches some potential candidates, but they all turn him down. However, he eventually meets Richard Dirks, who used to struggle with addiction himself and is willing to be his sponsor. During a lunch meeting for Step 4, Richard encourages Daryl to come clean about embezzling money at work. Despite trying to shift the blame onto a woman he spent the night with, Daryl ultimately confesses and gets fired as a consequence.
