Clerks: The Animated Series (2000–2001) is an American adult animated sitcom created by Kevin Smith for ABC. It is based on Smith’s 1994 comedy film of the same name, and was developed for television by Smith, his producing partner Scott Mosier, and former Seinfeld writer David Mandel. The show features character designs by Stephen Silver, known for his work on Disney Channel’s Kim Possible and Nickelodeon’s Danny Phantom. Notably, it is the first television program set in Smith’s beloved View Askewniverse and Disney’s second adult animated series after The PJs. While six episodes were produced, only two aired before ABC cancelled the show. The remaining episodes were later aired on Comedy Central.
In 2001, all six episodes of the short-lived TV series were released on DVD, marking one of its first successes in this format. Cast and crew commentary on the DVD often references their disagreements with the network during the show’s development. The entire series was eventually picked up by Comedy Central, with previously unaired episodes debuting on television on December 14, 2002. In 2006, UK digital channel ITV 4 began airing the show on late Monday nights. Adult Swim on Cartoon Network also began airing it on Friday nights starting November 14, 2008. Additionally, it was included in the “Jay and Silent Bob Takeover Marathon” on El Rey Network.
