Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) is a compelling science fiction drama film written and directed by the renowned Steven Spielberg. During an expedition in the Sonoran Desert, French researcher Claude Lacombe, along with his American interpreter David Laughlin and other members of their team, make a surprising discovery – Flight 19. This group of United States Navy Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bombers had mysteriously disappeared while flying over the Bermuda Triangle on December 5th, 1945. To everyone’s surprise, the planes are found unoccupied but perfectly preserved. Nearby, an elderly witness shares his own bizarre encounter of ‘the sun coming out at night’ and singing to him. In another part of the country near Indianapolis, air traffic controllers witness a near-miss between two airliners and a UFO.
And in rural Muncie, Indiana, three-year-old Barry Guiler wakes up to find his toys moving on their own at his family’s home. As he follows something outside, Jillian hurries after her son. Rolling through the area are large-scale power outages, leading electric utility lineman Roy Neary to investigate. While trying to gather his bearings, Roy has a close encounter with a UFO. As it flies over his truck, its lights lightly burn the side of his face before taking off with three others in the sky. Joining the chase are three police cars and mesmerized by the metaphysical experience, Roy watches as they disappear into the night sky. However, this fascination only heightens when Roy discovers the SS Cotopaxi intact and completely empty in the Gobi Desert. His wife Ronnie is dismayed as he becomes obsessed with UFOs, often making models of a mountain shape that appears subliminally to him.
