The American film Closer (2004), directed and produced by Mike Nichols and written by Patrick Marber, is based on his award-winning 1997 play of the same title. In London one busy morning, writer Dan Woolf encounters a striking American woman who has been hit by a car due to unfamiliarity with driving on the opposite side of the road in England. On their way back from the hospital, they take a detour to Postman’s Park. Dan learns her name is Alice Ayres and they begin a romantic relationship. One year later, Dan writes a novel inspired by Alice’s life. While promoting it with photographs, he flirts with Anna Cameron, an American photographer. Just as they share a kiss, Alice returns from the bathroom.

Dan tries to convince Anna to have an affair with him during this brief encounter before Alice’s interruption. After agreeing to have her portrait taken, Alice discreetly shares with Anna that she overheard something and becomes emotional during the photoshoot. However, she decides not to tell Dan and their relationship continues as normal. Despite this, Dan spends a year consumed by thoughts of Anna. A year later, he enters a cybersex chat room where he chats with Larry Gray, a British dermatologist. Pretending to be Anna, Dan invites Larry to meet at the aquarium, knowing it is a place Anna frequents. When Larry arrives at the meeting spot, he ends up running into the real Anna and discovers he has been tricked by Dan’s obsession with her.
