Cobra (1986)
Directed by George P. Cosmatos, Cobra (1986) is an American action film featuring Sylvester Stallone as the titular character. When a shooting at a Los Angeles supermarket turns into a hostage situation, Lt. Marion ‘Cobra’ Cobretti of the renowned ‘Zombie Squad’ is called upon by the police department to resolve it. Facing off against the shooter, who voices his belief in social Darwinism and talks of a ‘New World’, Cobretti takes him down before he can harm any hostages. As detectives process the crime scene, Cobretti receives a reprimand from Detective Monte for not following protocol, while also scolding reporters for not prioritizing the safety of potential victims. Unbeknownst to authorities, this incident is just one in a series of violent crimes committed by the ‘New World’, a cult that despises modern society and believes in eliminating the weak to make room for only the strongest and smartest to rule.
Model and businesswoman Ingrid Knudsen becomes the top target of the New World after witnessing a spate of killings committed by the cultists and their leader, known as the ‘Night Slasher’. She is immediately placed into protective custody under the watchful eye of Cobretti and his partner, Sgt. Tony Gonzales, following a failed assassination attempt. As more attempts are made on her life, Cobretti develops a theory that points to an organized group behind the attacks. However, his superiors dismiss his theory, though they agree to relocate Knudsen for her safety. The trio then moves from Los Angeles to the quaint town of San Remos. During this time, Cobretti and Knudsen’s relationship takes a romantic turn. On their journey, Officer Nancy Stalk, second-in-command at the New World, sneaks in among their police escort.
