Cocktail (1988)

Cocktail (1988), a romantic comedy-drama directed by Roger Donaldson from a screenplay by Heywood Gould and based on his book of the same name, follows Brian Flanagan. After completing his army service, he returns to New York City with hopes of securing a prominent job in the business world. However, when that doesn’t pan out, he turns to bartending while attending business school during the day. There, he meets Doug Coughlin, an experienced bartender who takes him under his wing and teaches him flairing techniques. The two become close friends, and Doug suggests they open a chain of bars called Cocktails and Dreams. Brian leaves school to pursue this venture, and they become popular bartenders at a trendy nightclub. It’s there that Brian catches the eye of Coral, a wealthy photographer, and their relationship blossoms.
Doug makes a wager with Brian, convinced that his relationship won’t last. Unknown to Brian, Doug persuades Coral to sleep with him. When Brian discovers the truth, he has a heated altercation with Doug in front of a crowded bar and ends their partnership. Fast forward two years, and Brian is employed at a seaside bar in Jamaica, working hard to save up for his own establishment. He meets the alluring artist Jordan Mooney and they embark on an intense romance. Suddenly, Doug reappears, now married to the wealthy and flirtatious Kerry, who is much younger than him. He challenges Brian to attract Bonnie, an older woman of means. Without hesitation, Brian accepts the dare and successfully wins over Bonnie’s affections. Sadly, Jordan witnesses Brian and Bonnie drunkenly heading towards her hotel room and is shattered by the sight.
