Coco (2017), an animated fantasy film from Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, takes place in the Mexican town of Santa Cecilia. In this town, a young woman named Imelda marries a man who later leaves her and their daughter Coco to pursue music. After he never returns, Imelda bans music from her family and starts a shoemaking business. Years pass and Imelda’s great-great-grandson Miguel now resides with his elderly great-grandmother Coco, parents, and grandmother – all of whom are shoemakers. Despite the music ban, Miguel secretly admires the late musician Ernesto de la Cruz and learns to play guitar by watching his old films. On the Day of the Dead, Miguel accidentally breaks a frame containing a photo of Imelda and infant Coco on their family ofrenda. To his surprise, he discovers another section of the photo showing his great-great-grandfather holding Ernesto’s famous guitar with his head torn off. Convinced that this proves Ernesto is his relative, Miguel announces to his family that he will become a musician.
Following the confrontation with his grandmother, Miguel’s guitar is destroyed in a fit of rage. In a desperate move, he sneaks into Ernesto’s mausoleum and takes the late musician’s guitar to compete in a local talent show. However, to his surprise, once he plays it, he becomes invisible to the living but can still interact with his deceased relatives who have come to visit for the holiday from the Land of the Dead. Upon arriving there with them, Miguel learns that Imelda cannot join them due to him unintentionally removing her photo from their family altar. He also discovers that taking Ernesto’s guitar has brought a curse upon him; he must receive a family blessing before sunrise or risk losing his life. Imelda offers her blessing on the condition that he gives up music, but Miguel chooses to seek out Ernesto’s blessing instead.
