Collateral (2004)
Collateral (2004) is an American neo-noir action thriller film directed and produced by Michael Mann from a script by Stuart Beattie. Max Durocher, a Los Angeles cab driver, dreams of starting his own limousine business. During one of his evening shifts, he picks up federal prosecutor Annie Farrell, who works for the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California. The two strike up a conversation and Annie hands Max her business card. Shortly after, Max picks up another fare – Vincent – who claims to be in town for just one night to finalize a real estate deal. Despite some reservations, Max agrees to drive him to multiple locations as requested. However, their seemingly routine night takes a dark turn when a corpse falls onto Max’s car at their first stop. It is then revealed that Vincent is actually a hitman and he forces Max to conceal the body in his trunk and continue driving.
Eventually, LAPD detective Ray Fanning arrives at the scene where Vincent committed the murder and informs them that the victim was an informant for the police. At the second stop, Vincent restrains Max’s hands to the steering wheel while two young men rob them and take Vincent’s briefcase. In self-defense, Vincent shoots the assailants and retrieves his briefcase. Later, at the hospital morgue, Fanning examines the bodies of criminal lawyer Sylvester Clark, Vincent’s second target, and the two robbers. Fanning realizes that this is the work of a hitman. To continue his mission, Vincent instructs Max to meet him at a jazz club where they will find their next target, Daniel. A man set to testify against Vincent’s client. Despite Max’s pleas for mercy, Vincent insists on proceeding with his plan and challenges Daniel to answer a question about Miles Davis.
